It’s almost that time of year again - - - Tax Time. I recently came across an article that nicely summarizes the 2018 Deadlines for 2017 US IRS Annual Wage and Tax Reports, as well as what differentiates the tax reporting of employees and independent contractors. Here are a few of my favorite highlights:

  • Starting in 2017 for the 2016 tax year, the deadlines for filing Form W-2 and Form 1099-MISC were pushed up. Those earlier deadlines are still in place in 2018 for the 2017 tax year.
  • If any of the filing dates fall on a weekend (or national holiday) the filings are due the first business day thereafter.
  • W-2 forms must be provided to employees by January 31, 2018, for 2017 taxes.
  • If you think you are going to have to file late, you may request a 30-day extension of time to file W-2s.
